Buicks were always considered quite luxury automobiles, but during the muscle car madness in the early 60’s and late 70’s they needed a vehicle, which is beautiful, comfortable and powerful at the same time. The 1970 Buick GSX mission was to drive people into the showroom with a bright color and muscular attitude, so the enthusiasts would come in and look at the rest of the cars.
But besides being a sale tool the 1970 Buick GSX Stage one was a screaming performer as well. The GS models were quite nice, but when the “X” and the Stage 1 option were added buyers started to look at the Buicks from a different perspective and this particular model today is considered one of the best classic muscle cars of all times and Buick’s best car ever.
The 1970 Buick GSX came in two colors: Saturn Yellow and Powell White and its gorgeous body style was a serious competitor to the GTO Judge, HEMI Cuda, Chevelle SS and all other best classic muscle cars in terms of vision. Another thing that attracted more customers was the power windows, steering, brakes, AC and all the options you could order with the Buick GSX.
Last, but not least let’s talk about some horsepower & torque. The regular 455 cubic inch V8 GS engine upgraded with the stage 1 heads and cam plus a carburetor tuning was rated at 360hp and 510 ft/lbs. These are serious numbers for any mid-size muscle car of that time and when you add the 4-speed transmission you are looking at one top notch muscle car.
Out of the 678 Buick GSX cars produced there were only 120 with the Stage 1 package and that is what makes those rare classic muscle cars cost as much as $200, 000 when restored to show room quality.
